Coexist with Islam? Is Cardinal Koch Smoking Crack?

I came across a story on PewSitter today that linked to a translated interview that Kurt Cardinal Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, gave to Swiss Television (SRF). In his interview the Cardinal said a number of hopeful things about Islam versus the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria/and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL). He stated that “ISIS is a cruel perversion of religion,” and despite that fact that Christians are being persecuted more today than they were in the first two centuries, he believes that that day will come when the fundamental right of religious freedom will be respected and people of different religions will learn to live with each other.

Neither one of those things are true! ISIS is not a perversion of Islam; rather, it is the fulfillment of the Islamic dream of its founder. ISIS is to the prophet Muhammad what the fulfillment of his “I Have a Dream” speech was to Martin Luther King Jr. What is Cardinal Koch talking about when he says we can coexist with Islam? The Qur’an doesn’t suggest coexistence as an option! Here is just a TINY sample of what the Islamic religious text says about being intolerant towards other religions, especially Christianity:

  • “Indeed, those who disbelieve – it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe. Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment” Surat Al-Baqarah 2:6-7.
  • “Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] – then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place. And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease – then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do. But if they turn away – then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper” Surat Al-‘Anfāl 8:38-40.
  • “O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, “We are afraid a misfortune may strike us.” But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful” Surat Al-Mā’idah 5:51-52.

You’ll have Muslims who will want to contextualize those verses for you, and as a theologian I appreciate that. I know people who take the sacred Scriptures out of context as well. That being said, they can put all those intolerant verses in the Qur’an in all of their historical context, but what Islam can’t do is pass the duck test. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, guess what dude? It’s a DUCK! Unlike Christianity or Judaism, Islam began as a religion of the sword and it will always be a religion of the sword. The religion of Islam is inseparable from its sword proselytizing and conquests, which is why the concept of holy war still lives on in it today. The fulfillment of Islam is destruction of all things that philosophically or materially opposes it.

This wasn’t Cardinal Koch’s first hit of that crack pipe called dreams and delusional hope. Back in 2006 he gave an interview with NZZ am Sonntag, which is a weekend newspaper of the New Journal of Zurich, in which he was commenting on the minaret (tall slender tower attached to Mosques) dispute in Sweeden. In this interview he rightly stated that ” . . . the problem is really not the strength of Islam but the weakness of Christianity.” Then he errantly added, “Islam is something quite different from the terrorist aberrations that exist.”

Then on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, just nine days after that NZZ interview, Pope Benedict XVI the Great warned the world about the approaching dark age of Islam in his speech at Aula Aula Magna of the University of Regensburg. In this prophet speech Pope Benedict cites the seventh conversation in erudite Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus’s dialouge on the subject of Christianity and Islam (cir. 1391). Benedict says:

“The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: “There is no compulsion in religion”. According to some of the experts, this is probably one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur’an, concerning holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the “Book” and the “infidels”, he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness, a brusqueness that we find unacceptable, on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. “God”, he says, “is not pleased by blood – and not acting reasonably (σὺν λόγω) is contrary to God’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats… To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death…”

People listen! Do not be deceived! There can be no coexistence with Islam! None whatsoever! It’s not because Christians and Jews can’t coexist with them, rather, it’s because they are incapable of coexisting with us. The work of Islam has always been to gain the majority authority so that they might suppress the minority opposition. There is no such thing as separation of Mosque and state, or separation of faith and political ideology in Islam. There was a time when we understood that, and those Christians who did understand it both implored the prayers of the Virgin Mary and crusaded with the sword to defend our faith and Christian lands against that Arianism infested demonic religion.

I don’t pretend to know the solution to deal with Islam now. The only weapon I have at my disposal is prayer, truth, and the pen. But, I do know this, you must not fall into the trap that Cardinal Koch has and start smoking that crack pipe of dreams and delusional hope. Islam wants you either or converted or dead. Coexistence is not an option!

Mr Gray, thank for using your pen to tell the truth about Islam. Certainly co-existence on the basis of social equality is not possible in a Muslim controlled society. The Sharia forbids it. Just a few tweaks if I may. Muslims need not be a majority to achieve their goal of control. All that Islam teaches is that society proclaims ‘that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah.’ Also Quran 9:29 leaves open the option that non-Muslims may continue to exist if they accept a lower social status, pay a special tax and be ‘made to feel subdued.’ You are right in your conclusion that if non-Muslims refuse this arrangement then war/death is the only option. I am glad you are staying away from the crack!

    • Thanks Kinana. I think you are correct. Authority would have been a better word to use than majority. But I consider 9:29 not as coexisting as much as I do subjugation. Indonesia would be a good example of that. The Muslim majority allows them to practice their faith, but not with absolute freedom.

Mr Gray we agree. The best quote I have found to sum up Quran 9:29 is from Al Qaeda: ‘There are only three choices in Islam: either willing submission [i.e. become a Muslim]; or payment of the Jizya, through physical though not spiritual, submission to the authority of Islam; or the sword – for it is not right to let him [an infidel] live. The matter is summed up for every person alive: either submit, or live under the suzerainty of Islam, or die.’

When the Church is run by Christians again seems to be an oxymoron. If it isn't run by Christians, then it isn't run. Lets just say, when Catholics (if ever) are given the reins of the Catholic Buildings and Authority again.

I congratulate you, David for the wonderful analysis you made. We do not know why our Pope and other clergy want to be diplomatic forgetting truth. At least Pope Francis once said that justifying violence by some people in the name of God and religion are enemies of God. We know that listening ,reasoning, need for non-violence are all alien to followers of Islam. We can pray for wisdom for the Holy Spirit.
