Pope Francis, Barack Obama & The Rise of the Beta Male

by David Gray, October 21, 2014

After Pope Francis published his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, which, in part, attempted to highlight the concern that the rich should have for the poor and the marginalized, he became known in conservative circles as the Pope of the Redistribution of Wealth; to which, liberals would have preferred a more fun title – Pope of Economic Justice. Nevertheless, due to the Pope’s interest in governments and corporations sharing their booty he was compared to President Barack Obama.

Perhaps, to a very limited degree, Pope Francis and Barack Obama do have a common interest in economic justice, but what everyone has missed is the most unique and historic similarity that these two men share. For the first time in the history of the world, the leader of Christians in the world, and leader of the most powerful/influential government in the world are Beta Males.

Where Did the Alphas Go?

The natural order of things dictates that there always be more Betas than Alphas. Alphas are the leaders who everyone naturally has confidence in following, and historically, Alphas have always been the leaders in every field of play, but ever since the 1960’s things began to change. There were rapid and seismic moral and ideological shifts in society. There began to be an increase of fatherless homes due to ‘free-love’ (i.e. contracepted fornication without consequence); there began to be a breakdown in the family structure due to no-fault divorce; there was a precipitous rise of radical feminism, which rejected all the trappings of Alpha male patriarchy; and all of this contributed to a fall and disinterest in true masculism. Eventually we ended up with men carrying man-bags (purses) and wearing skin-tight jeans (oftentimes worn with their underwear showing).

Together, all of this created a vacuum of leadership in the community in which people began to become uncomfortable with the natural masculine leadership traits of the Alpha male. The male and the father became an object of ridicule and buffoonery. Strong male characters on television and in commercials were replaced with jokes – Homer Simpson type of men, whose home was led by a strong and competent female.

Then there was the rise of social media into this space, which stimulated and satisfied the extremely strong need of the Beta male to be affirmed and validated (liked and accepted by as many people as possible). Also entering this space was the term ‘non-judgement’, which is completely foreign to the Alpha male’s sensibilities. Then he was told that the manner in which he needs to publicly resolve conflict (although at times on a very immature and abusive level) was deemed to be bullying. Altogether, what were natural ways for him to lead and negotiate through life became darn near criminal behavior. Now, with his descent into the shadows and margins of society emerged a new form of male leadership, of which there were plenty – the Beta Male.

How to Spot a Beta Male? The Five Things They Can’t Hide

In my article What is an Alpha Male and Why was Jesus the Epitome of all Alpha Males? I went to great lengths to explain what an Alpha Male is and is Not, because there is a great deal of misconception about what/who Alphas are. I think Beta Males get even more of a bum rap. They are often portrayed as being the opposite of Alphas, as nerds, as being timid, indecisive, creepers, greatly lacking self-confidence, needy, complainers, invisible to society. Inasmuch as those are some great identifies of a Beta Male, which could also just as easily fit Omega Males, a distinction needs to be made here between transparent Betas and Betas who are posing as acceptable Alphas (i.e. having the pretence of confidence, surety, reliability, and strength). Yet, even as hard as they try to pretend, Beta males cannot escape their urgent and obsessive need to be liked and accepted.

Indeed, the first thing that Betas can’t hide is the fact that they’d sell their own mother’s soul to be liked and accepted. This is how you can always spot them. They might have learned how to be outwardly decisive; they might invoke confidence; they might not look like creepers; they might not be outwardly complaining and needy; they might have learned how to be popular in this new social-media space, but at the end of the day, the fact of the matter is that they do all of this posing for the sole purpose of being liked and accepted by those they need it from most.

Both Pope Francis S.J. and President Barack Obama need to be liked and accepted. This is so clear with Pope Francis, I need not elaborate any further about it. With President Obama, don’t let the second-term poll numbers fool you. With those whom he needs acceptance (e.g. homosexuals and radical liberals) he is a god.

The second thing that Betas can’t hide is their hatred towards Alpha Males. Betas believe that everything that is wrong in the world is due to Alpha males having been in charge. So, the first thing you’ll notice about a Beta Male, is that when you give them a position of leadership, their primary task is to undo EVERYTHING that the Alphas had put in place. Betas are complete destructionists and rejectionists of tradition, until they realize that the Alphas were right, which they eventually do. Eventually, they will send troops back to Iraq, so to speak.

It’s clear by now that President Obama hates everything that the United States of America has previously stood for. Since 2008, he has been on a vicious rampage to tear down every vestige of American excellence and decency. As Obama grew to hate America while looking at her from afar in Indonesia, so too has Pope Francis grew to hate the emotions that the ‘rigid teaching’ and ‘detached theology’ evoked in the marginalized people he served in Argentina. Since his pontificate began, he has received it has his calling to respond to his hatred by attempting to dismantle the traditional expression of the faith, and to make it nicer and more appealing to sinners.

The third thing that Betas can’t hide is their insecurity and cliquish nature. They can pretend to be the most confident people in the world, but that posing is exposed by this one thing they all do. They put into exile anyone who disagrees with them. A friend of mine told me a story about Catholic Bishop James W. Malone who served the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio from 1968 to 1995. The question was, ‘Why is that as you get further and further away from Cathedral in Youngstown that the parishes tend to be less and less liberal.’ Her contention is that it began with Bishop Malone who would keep all of the liberal priests close to him in Youngstown, while he sent all of those conservative priests as far away in the diocese as possible. Now, I never knew Bishop Malone, so I don’t if he was an Alpha or a Beta, but that is precisely what a Beta would do.

If you place a Beta in a leadership position in an organization heavily influenced by Alpha Males, the first thing they will do is establish a clique of very like-minded people. Remember, they hate Alphas. They don’t trust them further than their mother can throw them. They will not rely on them for anything. They spent far too many years being subjected by and oppressed by Alphas, that, now that it is their time, they will not depend on them for anything. Most people thought it was a show of humility when they saw Pope Francis reject the traditional residence of the Pope, reject the traditional garb; reject the Popemobile; reject this; reject that. That wasn’t humility. No, that was simply a Beta doing what a Beta does. A Beta is not going to indulge in the very thing he hates that the Alpha built, and that he wants to tear down as soon as possible.

President Obama has been notorious for stacking his inner clique with people who are equal to or more liberal than he. When it was discovered that Pope Francis S.J. was going to demote/exile Raymond Cardinal Burke from the head of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura to being Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta it came to no surprise to me. There was no way conceivable that a Beta Male, such as Pope Francis would keep such a strong and vocal Alpha Male, like Cardinal Burke, anywhere near him. If it were possible, Francis would have sent Burke to the Diocese of Uranus (pun intended).

The fourth thing that Betas can’t hide is their inability to lead. Betas can be just as ambitious, if not more so, than Alphas. The key difference is that an Alpha will tell you he is coming, while a Beta will play cloak-and-dagger with you. In a game of baseball an Alpha will be at the plate and will signal to the pitcher with his bat exactly where he’s going to hit the ball that the pitcher is about to throw his way. In contrast, a Beta will have that very same ambition to hit the ball, exactly where the Alpha said he was going to hit it, but he’ll never let you know.

This inability and disinterest in being transparent is the fatal flaw in the Betas character make-up. It forces him try to lead through public validation and consensus and to withdraw into his clique of agreement. A Beta cannot hide his inability to publicly confront people to their face. While the Alpha is quite comfortable in public confrontation (even nastily so at times, resulting in being called a bully), the Beta would do everything possible to avoid face-to-face conflict. As is the case, his ability to sway people to his position and win negotiations is greatly impaired. A Beta is a horrible salesperson. His way of winning an argument is try to find as many people as possible to agree with him. Everything is a public campaign to try to win broad public of support of everyone who doesn’t really matter.

Notice how every time President Obama is having a difficult time getting his way with congress, how he goes on the campaign trail to try to win their support of his ideas? Why would a President go hold rallies of his supporters, rather than go speak man to man with those whom he needs to buy into his ideas? Because that’s what Betas do! The thought of sitting down man to man with an Alpha to win their support makes their knees tremble. Similarly, Pope Francis’ idea of winning public support of his reformation is by giving interviews to a secular atheist, and by appearing to be a man of the people. For this, non-believers and unfaithful Catholics love Pope Francis’ program; that is, everyone who doesn’t matter in helping in him actually implement his program.

The final thing that Betas can’t hide is their machiavellian plots to get their way. Eventually the Beta realizes that building public support isn’t the way to achieve actual voting success with their peers. Something else needs to be done.

Alphas are a funny breed. An Alpha will happily follow another Alpha who is equal or stronger than them, but he will not happily follow a weaker Alpha or a Beta. In contrast, all Betas will follow an Alpha, either happily or unhappily. Even though an Alpha will allow himself to fall under the lead of a weaker Alpha or a Beta, usually there is a time limit to his patience. In contrast, a weaker Alpha or a Beta will follow a strong Alpha until he dies. My favorite example of a strong Beta who followed a strong Alpha is French Bishop Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord who was a dominate and mischievous indispensable Beta under Napoleon, Louis XVII, Charles X, and Lous-Phillippe. I also enjoy NBA Forward Scottie Pippen under the classic Alpha Male Michael Jordan.

With his ambition unleashed and unblocked in this modern Beta-friendly society, the Beta Male finds himself in leadership positions quite often where he inherits discontent Alphas under them. Betas understand that the Alpha Males they inherited do not really respect them as leaders. They view the Alphas as subversives and threats. As I said in point three, they’ll exile the Alphas, but what they will also do is stack the deck against them.

To accomplish this, Betas will maintain their inner clique, but so that they can overcome their inability to lead; particularly lead Alphas, they will attempt to diminish their power by overwhelming them with other Betas. In the case of Obama, he stacks the Federal Courts and tries to build a Democratic congress, and Pope Francis stacks the magisterium with his people.

Conclusion

Thank goodness for Vladimir Putin to remind us what Alpha Male political leadership looks like on a global stage, and thank goodness for the narratives about Christ Jesus in the Gospels to remind us the character of a true Alpha Male. Nevertheless, it is hard to imagine in this feminized and homosexualized society that the Alpha Male will soon make a return to be the acceptable choice of leadership. Until then, we will have to deal with the Rise of the Beta Male, and all of the passive games that come with it.

Nice job David. Spot on. It got me thinking though, and I can think of a lot more leaders and CEO's who are now girlymen.

    • Yeah, it's definitely trending Bob. Now Alphas have to pose as Beta's just to get ahead in many corporate environments.

Good, except totally wrong about Pope Francis, a mistake usually made by those who do not understand the Catholic Church.

    • Robert I could be totally wrong about Pope Francis, but the chances that he is an Alpha male who has been behaving for the past 20 years like a Beta male would is slim to none.

Truth is a wonderful thing, and thank you for saying a good word for Vladimir Putin who is the defender of Christianity against the forces of darkness (the US and the EU).

    • Yeah Mr. Lucky, I don't like everything Putin does, but he is the only world leader with any gravitas that has a strong moral backbone on issues that the West have caved in on.

Vladimir Putin a "defender of Christianity??? Seriously, dude? Are you high? Exactly what version of"christianity"does Putin defend, and what is the nature of that so-called "defense"---I can't wait to hear THIS one; I bet it's going to sound like the catholic church's defense of the forcible removal of the illegally - baptized 6-year-old Edgardo Mortara(a kidnapping Pius IX endorsed and was implicit in!).

While your premise may indeed be valid for President Obama; not a single assertion withstands the evidence (or reality for that matter) in regard to Pope Francis. Francis is an 'alpha-male' in every sense of the word (and having a degree (or two) in the biological sciences, I say this emphatically). Perhaps Cardinal Burke may offer some insight. As he reviews his newest relocation package, ask him "who's your daddy, now?"

LWC, You are totally wrong. Your rants at other blogs run by faithful Catholics and your failure to accept and respond to any logical arguments led to your being unwelcome there. I looked at the blog you linked to when you commented elsewhere and it was filled with dozens of examples of your failing to accept logical arguments that contradicted your viewpoint. You assert things as "facts" (with no evidence) when they are merely your beliefs or opinions. I banned you from commenting at my blog for the above reasons. As an aside, your comments elsewhere give the clear impression you support the gay agenda, which is totally at odds with Catholic moral teaching and natural law. May I suggest that instead of trolling around faithful Catholic blogs posting comments that contradict logic, instead you grab a book by a great saint like Catherine of Siena. Teresa of Avila, Louis de Montfort, or Francis de Sales and gain some enlightenment from their deep faith, holiness and spirituality? By the way, this blog post is right in the mark! I wish someone could print it out and out it on Francis' desk!

Jim, A faithful Catholic? Mmm. Bearing false witness? Or rather, with the benefit of doubt, perhaps, bearing 'ignorant' witness. Merciful? Meek? Humble? Might want to get that self-inventory going in time for January 1. I'm no less Catholic than you; and, no less entitled as an American to express my views and understanding of the Faith. And while you're clearly free to 'ban' me from any and every site you may be affiliated with; it speaks more against your frailties than it does mine. Echo-chambers are at best rhetorical dial tones, and at worst, breeding grounds of bigotry and hostility. It is inappropriate in this forum for me to defend my opinions on matters irrelevant to the given premise; but in the most highly unlikely scenario you remove such a silly, cowardly 'ban.' I'd be delighted to discuss any topic, at any time, for any length of time.

LWC, I bear no false witness. As part of your pattern, you make a claim but fail to back it with any reasoned argument. You've just done it again. Of course you're entitled to express your views. But if you don't believe, embrace and live what the Catholic faith teaches, on what basis do you conclude you are no less Catholic than one who does? If you support the gay agenda and are OK with people engaging in homosexual activity that is contrary to natural law, gravely sinful and that leads their souls away from salvation, what causes you to believe that makes you as solid a Catholic as one who follows the Church's teachings in this area? Christ calls us to repent and turn away from our sins, not embrace and continue them. I agree that this forum should not be used to discuss matters that are not relevant to it. But you made a spurious claim critical of this well reasoned and substantiated blog post like you've done elsewhere with no logical argument to back it, and I felt compelled to call it for what it is. You obviously do not believe everything the Catholic Church teaches, and you go around to blogs where people do and criticize them.

Our pope did not finish his PhD. Also reread his book the published with the rabbi: The rabbi pointed out how much they had in common as the rabbi was formally a scientist and the how our pope was a lab technician. Not terribly alpha.

    • LWC, as to replied to Robert below, I could be totally wrong about Pope Francis, but the chances that he is an Alpha male who has been behaving for the past 20 years like a Beta male are slim to none.

David, you're a treasure! I appreciate very much the time, effort, and passion you spent writing this masterpiece. I winced at some parts, fearing some beta bishop [or IRS/DOJ operative] might shut you down, but I must confess: I find your article illuminating, entertaining, and extremely - if strangely - comforting. If I'd ever meet you in person, I'll buy you a San Miguel. Now, compare and contrast your viewpoint to one I linked below, posted sometime ago [2008] on Fr. Z's [his comments in red], translated from Italian by Fabrizio Azzola, and authored by [drumroll!] the heretic Fr. Hans Kung [obviously a beta]: http://wdtprs.com/blog/2008/07/la-stampa-hans-kung-on-pres-bush-and-pope-benedict-xvi/

When Christ at a symbolic moment was establishing His great society, He chose for its corner-stone neither the brilliant Paul nor the mystic John, but a shuffler, a snob, a coward — in a word, a man. And upon this rock He has built His Church, and the gates of Hell have not prevailed against it. All the empires and the kingdoms have failed because of this inherent and continual weakness, that they were founded by strong men and upon strong men. But this one thing — the historic Christian Church — was founded upon a weak man, and for that reason it is indestructible. For no chain is stronger than its weakest link.G.K. Chesterton in Heretics

    • This is true. Yet, even before Pentecost Peter had Alpha traits. He was always the first to speak and first to stand up. He was always bold, courageous, and not afraid to be wrong. Peter was an Alpha male.

A typical ignorant sheeple talking nonsense. Obama is a controlled puppet, how can you determine his personality if all his moves are orders? And how can you determine the personality of puppet masters if all they're doing is deception of purpose and personality? Americans... and their sex obsessed sombies spewing animalistic "evolution" garbage.

Where does the information about alpha and beta males come from? I'm generally not a fan of pigeon holing people into rigid categories, though it can be helpful sometimes. I like your article, though, and it gives me something to think about. I also note that Pope Francis, who as a beta male would "sell his mother's soul to be liked and accepted" is not doing anything to improve his acceptance by the traditional or conservative Catholics.

    • Hi Janet, I agree about pigeon holing people. Alpha/Beta/Omega is just an apparent psychological/innate personality trait, such as one would draw from whether a person is the oldest, middle, or youngest sibling, or which zodiac sign they are. The Alpha/Beta/Omega construct is good for analyzing leadership ability. I've been studying this construct on an observational basis for about 20 years. I like to say that it is the book I'll never write, but always researching. Generally alphas don't have a high need to be liked, as much as they do need to be recognized as being first/best. In contrast, betas don't have a high need to be first/best, but they do need to be liked not by everyone, but by those 'they' like.

What is a Omega male? Same thing as a Beta?

    • Hey David - No, in the animal kingdom your omega males are castoffs, the weakest of the weak, the last in order - bottom feeders - chronically out of place with what is going on. In human society they go by the term 'creepers' nowadays. Very unmasculine in appearance and lifestyle choices. Often chronically unemployed, no ambition, socially awkward, would rather live in a fantasy world than real life.

      • If we ever arrive at that point in time when leaders are Omega males, RUN FER THEM DAR HILLS!!!! LOL

i wonder what it means for the Church that Francis is a Beta? I have mix feelings about him......I wonder could he cause a schism within the Church?

    • Schisms have always had both a political and a supporting/excusatory theological dimension. Pope Francis, while rubbing many faithful Catholics the wrong way, doesn't seem to be creating an environment that will cause an ideological rift on the basis of politics or theology. Certainly, he is offering new ideas on pastoral approach, but I don't think that will be enough to cause a schism. Someone once told me that there is an obvious reason why Popes don't have autopsies performed on their bodies after they die.
